Airtel Africa has revealed the retirement of its Chief Executive Officer, Olusegun “Segun” Ogunsanya, effective from July 1, 2024. Mr. Ogunsanya, with a tenure that began in 2012, steered the company’s Nigeria Operations for nine years before becoming the Group CEO in 2021. Under his leadership, the company achieved consistent double-digit revenue growth and introduced innovative products across the African continent.

Upon his retirement, Mr. Ogunsanya will take on the role of the inaugural Chair of the Airtel Africa Charitable Foundation. Leveraging his deep experience and local knowledge, he will guide the Foundation in advancing sustainability initiatives and charitable operations across the continent. Focused on digital inclusion, financial inclusion, education access, and environmental protection, the Charitable Foundation will operate independently of the Airtel Africa Group.

Following a 12-month advisory period post-retirement, Mr. Ogunsanya will continue to support the Chairman, the Airtel Africa Board, and the Chief Executive Officer. Sunil Taldar, currently serving as Director – Transformation since October 2023, will succeed Mr. Ogunsanya as the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer.

Sunil Bharti Mittal, Chairman of Airtel Africa, expressed gratitude for Mr. Ogunsanya’s significant contributions and welcomed Sunil Taldar as the Group’s next CEO. The appointment recognizes Taldar’s industry experience, strategic vision, and customer-centric approach. The Board believes Taldar is well-positioned to lead the company into its next phase of development.

Segun Ogunsanya, in reflecting on his tenure, expressed pride in the transformations achieved during his 12 years at Airtel Africa. He highlighted the company’s continuous impact on the lives of Africans and stated that it is the right time to pass the leadership baton, allowing a new leader to build on the company’s strengths.

The announcement marks a strategic transition for Airtel Africa, combining CEO succession with the establishment of a dedicated charitable foundation, aligning with the company’s commitment to sustainable development and community impact across Africa.
